Local Wildlife: Track & Scat Identification
The animals living around us often remain hidden, but they leave behind a trail of clues. In this hands-on nature workshop, participants will learn how to identify local wildlife by examining tracks, scat, feathers, fur, feeding signs, and other evidence found throughout the landscape.
Discover how to recognize signs left by familiar South Carolina species such as white-tailed deer, coyotes, raccoons, bobcats, beavers, wild turkeys, and other woodland animals. Participants will explore how the size, shape, placement, and condition of a track can reveal an animal’s identity, direction of travel, movement, and behavior.
The workshop will also cover how scat and feeding signs offer clues about an animal’s diet, habitat, and recent activity. By learning to slow down and read these subtle signs, participants will begin to see the woods as a living story filled with animals that may be nearby, even when they cannot be seen.
