Build a Mountain Dulcimer
Spend two immersive days learning the traditional craft of mountain dulcimer making as you build your own fully playable instrument from carefully prepared hardwood components.
Each dulcimer will feature a cherry body, headstock, and fingerboard paired with a mahogany soundboard. The instructor will mill the wooden components, bend the sides, and predrill the necessary holes before class so participants can focus on the hands-on assembly process.
Working with traditional hand tools, glue, and clamps, you’ll assemble the sides and end blocks, attach the back and soundboard, and complete the remaining steps needed to transform the individual pieces into a finished instrument. Along the way, you’ll learn how the dulcimer’s construction influences its distinctive Appalachian sound.
All materials and tools are provided. At the end of the workshop, you’ll tune your handcrafted mountain dulcimer, learn your first chords and traditional melody, and take home an instrument made by your own hands.
