Hands-On Learning for the Wild & Curious
Little Folk Forest School is a nature-based learning program at The Heritage Farm where children experience the outdoors through exploration, play, storytelling, seasonal rhythms, and hands-on discovery. Rooted in the philosophy of our Folk School, we believe children learn best through meaningful experiences that foster curiosity, confidence, creativity, and connection to the natural world. From creek walks and fort building to folk crafts, nature study, animal care, and woodland exploration, Little Folk encourages children to slow down, get muddy, ask questions, and develop practical skills and lasting memories in the woods, fields, and streams around them.
Why We Created Little Folk Forest School
Little Folk Forest School was created from a deep desire to give children a slower, more connected childhood rooted in nature, creativity, meaningful experiences, and hands-on learning.
As part of The Folk School at The Heritage Farm, we believe many important skills and traditions are slowly disappearing — not only practical skills, but also the simple experience of childhood spent outdoors exploring creeks, climbing trees, building forts, observing wildlife, and learning through curiosity and discovery.
We wanted to create a place where children could step away from constant screens, schedules, and pressure, and instead experience the natural world firsthand through movement, imagination, storytelling, seasonal rhythms, and outdoor exploration.
Our goal is not to recreate a traditional classroom outdoors, but to provide a space where children can grow through wonder, confidence, creativity, resilience, and meaningful connection to the world around them.
At Little Folk, children are encouraged to get muddy, ask questions, take healthy risks, create with their hands, care for living things, and experience the kind of childhood many of us remember — one filled with freedom, adventure, nature, and simple joys.
We believe these experiences help shape capable, curious, compassionate children who feel deeply connected to both the land and the people around them.
